What is VPN? Why use it?
VPN means Virtual Private Network. It is a connection method that creates a secure "tunnel" across the Internet between you and your office, a VPN provider, or your home.

Who is VPN for?
For the purposes of UP Manila, VPN connection is useful for the following stakeholders:
Faculty members and students who need to access online publications for their respective teaching or academic requirements.
Staff who need urgent access to particular UPM local sites, in situations where they are away from UP Manila.
Stakeholders who wish to access external sites important to UPM (e.g., uis.up.edu.ph, gmail.com), with security in mind. (As stated above, VPN connection provides added security to users' online activities.)
UP Manila system and network administrators.
You must have an active pair of ADS credentials, which you use for accessing the Internet from within the UP Manila network. If you don't have any yet, email firstname.lastname@example.org and make the request, attaching in the email a scanned copy of your UPM ID.
A Google account (either @up.edu.ph or @gmail.com). VPN-related documents are shared on Google Drive, which can only be accessed with this account.
Familiarity with your computing device's operating system. You may need assistance from knowledgeable persons to be able to install and configure VPN in your machine.
When you connect to your office or home (considered a private network) via VPN, it is as if you're actually located in it. Thus, the term "virtual" in the term.
VPN is also used by people very conscious about their online security, particularly when they are using a public computer or are connected to a non-secure wireless network.
VPN is particularly essential to UPM Manila for the following reasons:
Some web sites or web-based information systems local to UP Manila are only accessible from within UP Manila via its private network.
Online publications (used by faculty members and students) recognize only computers connected to the Internet from within UP Manila via its private network.
The IMS administers the VPN service. Any queries about the VPN service must be sent to the IMS Network Team via email address email@example.com.
